Tues 10/12
So there is a fancy thermostat in my new unit. This needed to be reset and programmed (easily accomplished and with no pain). Above that gadget I needed to work on was the panel for the alarm system. Now I didn’t know the alarm passcode (and still don’t think I do) nor did I have any manual as to how to work it. Regardless, I hit some buttons.
Alarms are loud. Wake neighbors up four blocks away loud. (I set it off at exactly 9:23)
With the alarm screeching I started attacking the problem:
1. Kill all the power to the unit at the main breaker – No change
2. Run to the basement and kill all the power to the unit there AND kill the public power – No Change
3. Run back upstairs to realize the door had closed behind me and I was now locked out - Priceless
Did I mention that it was raining pretty hard? Or that I had forgotten to put on shoes when running downstairs?
My neighbor upstairs happened to get PeaPod and so was coming out (It couldn’t have been the earsplitting siren emanating from multiple locations in the building because of the alarm….) and she kindly offered to help me break into my apartment.
Luckily (sort of anyway), I had opened a window that was a mere 10-11 feet off the ground. After collecting some metal wire shelving from the basement I began to climb up into the window.
At about this point I heard a distinct noise over the wail of the alarm.
*Ping*
then
*Ping – Ping – Ping Ping*
The shelf decided to come apart while I was perched on it 10 feet in the air. I promptly pushed off the shelf and dove through the window.
I got about a quarter of the way through. (It was much more graceful in my mind)
After wriggling my way through the window and into the sink I executed a double somersault to land safely on the floor (OK, maybe not but it wasn’t that bad!)
The house having been successfully broken into the alarm promptly decided to cease its scream. Seriously, thirty minutes of ear piecing sirens end AFTER the successful break in?
What a way to start the day.
